references

like any other traveler, i armed myself with tons of books and reference guides before i left for seoul. until i realised that half of those i bought were either absolutely useless, or gave information that didnt really fit the needs of someone my profile. so i thought i'll recommend some of the better ones (and save you some money), and even send you my own notes if you wish!

one. anch's guide to seoul, 2011 (eng)
my introduction to travelling seoul via the train, highlighting must-see attractions and interesting activities along popular metro-lines. i've also included a special "off the beaten track" spots for the adventurous traveler so email me if you want a free copy of this!

two. korea travel guide by KTO, 2011 (eng)
the official travel guides by the korea tourism organization (published once a year, but the content doesn't differ much), and can be obtained free from the korea plaza at samsung hub, raffles place. i like that its simple, yet comprehensive style (which includes basic write-ups on attractions, and basic information like opening hours and telephone numbers). also includes a pull-out train map, and is light enough to be carried around while traveling.

three. 韓國大首爾, 2011 (mandarin)
similar to the KTO guides, this also introduces seoul through highlights of areas (eg, myeongdong, insadong, dongdaemun etc) and includes basic information (numbers and directions) for easy reference. but, it also includes special compilations of top10 nightspots, top10 spas, top15 views, top20 markets, top20 food streets etc and is a good guide to the whole of seoul! unfortunately, this is in mandarin (traditional characters), so not everyone can understand.

four. hi seoul, 2009 (mandarin)
written by taiwanese author, kelly, who stayed in korea for a period of time. while the introduction of places aren't that fabulous (as it focuses on specific shops, without giving clear directions on how to locate them), i like the little titbits of information provided on korea, and very thoughtful translation of dishes into chinese descriptions, so you know what you're ordering!

five. agit in seoul, 2010 (mandarin)
this isn't really a traveler guide, instead, it's more targeted at the niche audience- the ones looking for arty places to chillax at. the book showcases musuems, unique art-spots, unknown nooks and corners of seoul, unfamiliar streets (little italy, little france etc) and is a refreshing read, even though its unlikely for the first-time traveler to visit many of the featured places.
